Tourists will soon realise that the Old Town is full of character and some of Corfu Town's oldest attractions, while those holidaying with families with no doubt enjoying spending time splashing around at Aqualand.

Much of the action is to be found within the resorts of Benitses, the village of Roda, and Paleokastritsa, where the Moni Theotokou monastery resides, amongst other popular tourist attractions and sights to see. Golfers may be interested in playing a round at the Corfu Golf Club, which lies on the western coast, to the south of the Paleokastritsa, close to Ermones Beach.

Paleokastritsa Resort / Moni Theotokou (Monastery)

The monastery known as the Moni Theotokou can be found on Corfu's west coast, within the resort of Paleokastritsa. Established as far back as the 13th century, the monastery building here today was actually built during the 18th century and contains a detailed picture showing the Last Judgement. Outside, the walls of the Moni Theotokou are whitewashed and draped in bougainvillea, which is truly a sight to behold when it flowers. Other attractions in Paleokastritsa include both the Corkyra Dive Club and the Korfu Diving Centre, as well as plenty of sandy beaches and motorboats for hire.

Old Town

The Old Town area of Corfu Town is particularly enchanting and contains a number of appealing historical attractions, which often offer a distinctive Venetian flair. Much of the Old Town comprises a maze-like array of cobblestone alleyways and these winding streets as referred to as the 'kantounia'. The Venetian Citadel is a particular highlight, as is the seafront esplanade and the views across the Bay of Garitsa.

Ano Plateia image

Ano Plateia (Upper Square) and Kato Plateia (Lower Square)

Close to the historic Venetian Citadel in Corfu Town is a large central square, which is separated into two main areas by an intersecting streets. The Upper Square is referred to locally as the 'Ano Platei', while the enormous Lower Square goes by the name of the 'Kato Plateia' and is reputed to be amongst the largest plazas in the whole of south-east Europe. A number of noteworthy attractions surround the Kato Plateia, such as various green spaces, seasonal flowers, a Romani-influenced rotunda, and a rather gorgeous music pavilion, where regularly performances by the town's Philharmonic Orchestra (Philharmoniki) are staged - well worth looking out for.

Aqualand picture

Aqualand

One of the very best of all the family orientated tourist attractions on Corfu, Aqualand comes highly recommended and offers the ultimate way to cool down on a hot day. Aqualand truly does offer something for everyone, with a beach area and sun loungers for those who simply want to lay back and relax, along with enormous water slides, 'free fall' slides, a winding lazy river, a giant Jacuzzi, and a shallow pool for younger children, which comes complete with its own mini octopus and frog. There is even an adventure playground, bouncy castle and arcade with the latest video games, along with a restaurant, a bar, and ice cream shops selling Greek-style 'gelateria'. It is quite likely that you will spend an entire day in Aqualand, particularly if you come here with children.

View of Benitses Town and adjacent coastline

Benitses Town / Resort

Benitses is a small town sited roughly 12 km / 7 miles to the south of Corfu Town, close to the scenic emerald valley. The narrow streets provide a certain charm to Benitses, while the 'O Paxinos' taverna is a superb place to stop off for lunch and offers diners an extensive, multi-language menu. Benitses is home to a couple of narrow, sandy beaches, and now spreads along the seafront, either side of its centrally located harbour. Other attractions include a pleasant walking trail through the valley to the 'water springs', while children may like to pay a visit to the Benitses Shell Museum, where there are fossils, sharks' teeth and a collection of object and mounted creatures found in the surrounding waters.

Roda Village / Resort

The highly characterful village of Roda resides on the northerly coastline of Corfu and originally started life as nothing more than a small fishing village. These days, Roda has been somewhat swallowed up by the island's flourishing tourist industry and its main attractions and souvenir shops tends to be based along the waterfront. The beach scene is reasonable and many holiday makers enjoy hiring small motorboats, exploring the coastline at their leisure. Also of interest is the remaining fishing harbour, which is located on the eastern side of the beach, and of course, Roda's acclaimed nightlife.

Corfu Golf Club offers something different, away from the beach resorts, bars and shops. Also close to the hilltop village of Pelekas, the Golf Club boasts an especially impressive course, which is reputed to be amongst Europe's most beautiful. The landscape around the golf course comprises woodland attractions, lakes, meandering streams and excellent views, while for many, a meal in the spacious clubhouse is another important part of the game.
